Messy Room
Mom told me to clean up the mess
that lay on my bedroom floor,
on my bed, in my drawers, barely stored,
leading to Mom’s silly stress.
I cleaned faster than a racecar,
around the room like a tornado,
putting clothes, shoes, toys, an old Oreo
where they truly belonged…what a Rock Star!
I kicked myself into second gear.
Mom will be proud of her dear, little ME
who worked so hard, muscles feeling fatigue.
I knew mom would be smiling from ear to ear!
“Mom! I am done! It is clear
that I did exactly what you told me to do,
without a frown, or a grumpy whimper, too.”
“Hmmm,” said she. “But, under the bed, what is here?”
“I do not know. It just can’t be!
I placed it all away. Maybe a tricky Fairy…
or a Leprechaun changed my things, just barely.”
She rolled her eyes, made a groan. Guess no playtime for me to see.
Do you remember the fairy tale of Pinocchio? Carlo Collodi published Pinocchio in 1883. It is a story about a wooden boy who could not tell a lie without his nose growing.
This issue’s “Write It!” idea is a clever way of writing poetry or prose with a bit of exaggeration, and without your nose growing ever so long. Think of a time when you may have exaggerated a moment of time with a friend. Maybe you were sharing about how you studied so hard for a test, a long hike with your family, or a game where you almost made that winning touchdown or goal.
Now, take that memory and really exaggerate it …. a lot. This is the theme of your fun writing experience this time. Remember to write about things you can relate to through your own experiences or funny stories. They make the best story. Here is an example many of you may understand!
