1. Using a square piece of paper works really well with this subject and may challenge the artist even more. Start drawing the chameleon by creating a long triangle on its side, on the left or right side of the paper. Then draw the body, starting at the top and bottom of the triangle, widening out and then tapering back narrow again at the start of the tail.

2. When drawing the tail start on either the top or bottom and then go down a few inches before you start drawing a nice wide curl. Do not go too tight or have a lot of turns on your curl because you have to create the other second side of that tail, too. Then draw the other side of that tail from either the top or bottom and follow along the curl until it meets in the middle of the circle, with the first line. Making the tail 3-dimensional.
Next draw the front and back legs. They are mirror images of each other with small pointed toes. They have a 90-degree bend at their knees. Make the eye a big circle that pops right off the top of their head! Don’t forget the pupil. They can make either a closed smiling mouth or maybe slightly open one with a long tongue and a juicy bug at the end of it. Make some fancy triangle spikes down his back too. Lastly make some stripes on the chameleon’s body and tail.
3. The chameleons need to be in their environment so position a branch going across the page making sure the chameleons feet sit inside the branch a bit. Don’t forget to show his other two legs peeking through between the branch and his body. Making one or two other branches helps to create a real jungle feel. Add a few leaves on the branches as well. Optional: If there is room, feel free to add a second chameleon on the page.

4. With the Sharpie marker, trace over all your pencil lines including the eye, stripes and branches and leaves. Finally color the chameleon with the oil pastels, including his tail with all the various colors in the rainbow. Color the branches and leaves too. Don’t forget white!
